Shout out to Dakota Tree Surgeon for these 1” Black Hills blue-stain pine slabs! It was a good deal and I bought it not knowing what would come of it. Well, a very unique desk is what came of (most of) it. When a desk was needed the ideas started flowing. There were significant cracks and rotting in the wood so it was interesting piecing it together and reinforcing in various spots. I used two slabs for the desktop and struggled a bit getting straight edges to join. I gave it a good sanding for a clean surface but left it au naturale with no stain. The whole thing is a bit of a gamble though as this wood was not dried before I started this project with it. I’m concerned that over the next year it will start to crack apart as it dries. I guess if it does: Wabi Sabi!!!

We recently did some kid-rearranging around here, as it became apparent that one tiny bedroom for two teenage girls was not cutting it. Once we moved furniture and beds around, our oldest daughter was left needing a desk. For her birthday, Dustin built her this beautiful, raw wood desk from a slab of blue-stained pine. It suits her natural, woodsy personality so perfectly. And there’s plenty of shelf space for her very precise organization. Which might be her favorite part of all.
