Boring, blah, worn down no more! I know people like to see before and afters but I intentionally did not take any before pictures, oofta. Ha! Used some gift cards to get an oscillating tool. The previous backsplash was some sort of brick facade made of plaster and demolition of it probably couldn’t have occurred without the new “wiggle saw”. Having the inside of the wall exposed revealed some very shoddy and frankly dangerous electrical modifications. That wasn’t the end of issues either. I measured the countertop hole for the sink from the left but the software at Menards expects it from the right…yeah…there went an extra four days. Chalk paint was a new experience for me! I have a tenuous relationship with paint. I appreciate and enjoy color and the way it can transform a space. Yet, I get annoyed (or some similar feeling) when doing it. Nine times out of ten I reflect and see it was totally worth it. And the transformation of this space was so so worth it. This kitchen is attractive and vibrant and full of life — just like my wife! (Deal with it. I’ll be cheesy all day long for her.) Probably the best part of this project, though, was the quality time spent with her brainstorming and picking out designs and colors.

“Hey, babe, I just had a major injury and can’t move from the couch for two months. What should we do this winter?”
“How about we remodel the kitchen?”
“Sounds swell.” And so it was.
I felt AWFUL at how much of the work Dustin had to take over on this massive project — thanks to my injury, I was pretty useless. We replaced the counters, sink, and faucet (thanks to a wildly generous wedding gift!). We put up a new (GORGEOUS) backsplash, and we painted all the cabinetry. Quite the overhaul! For the paint, I mixed up homemade chalk paint using regular latex paint and unsanded grout. We decided to give it a distressed look, so we painted a couple layers of gray as a basecoat, then the teal over top, and I went behind Dustin with a rag and wiped off some of the teal after he laid it on to bring the gray through in areas. I can’t tell you how madly in love with this kitchen I am! And of course the man who made it all happen.
PS. I did scrounge up some “before” pics, and snuck a few in the “during” stages! Shhhhhh. I know my husband’s stance on this, but I for one LOVE to see the dramatic transformation side-by-side.
