What do you remember getting for gifts as a kid? Do you still have any of those things? One of our kids wanted an alpaca for Christmas (or birthday?). Well, of course, a live alpaca wasn’t in the cards but I did just happen to get a new to me scroll saw…and so began the little wooden animal thing. Brianna finds a saw workable silhouette online, sizes it appropriately, and prints it out. Then, I cut it out. I’ll tell ya, with a scroll saw, the blade and wood hardness really makes itself evident. The recipients have all loved their respective gifts. And I love that!

These are SUCH fun and quirky gifts to make for the kids’ friends! They tell us the friend’s favorite animal, and I either sketch or find a good silhouette to bring to life, then Dustin takes it to the garage. We’ve done dogs, a hamster, a narwhal, a sloth…too many to remember at this point! They are definitely unexpected gifts, and ones that will stick around for a while. It’s also nice to put more thought and effort into a gift than whatever random new toy is all the rage.
